I actually had a Christmas card design prepared months earlier but, when push came to shove, I was feeling a little art deco and switched things around.

The cards are simple, and I had a two-hour window while my daughter napped to do the make ready and run 100 cards through the press twice. Miraculously, I just barely made it.

They're not perfect and they didn't all arrive at their destinations before Christmas, but... we had a card! (And a lovely new family photo, thanks to James Everett Photography.)
I used to do this more often, but now that I have a toddler, going to the movies is kind of a rare treat. That said, I wasn't particularly excited about the film and, once there, I found myself completely alone in the theatre. Which kind of creeped me out (think: old theatre, smallish screen, red velvet curtains on every wall). But once I chose a seat, the screen immediately lit up with this:

Then they got right to the previews. So I had this weird reaction of simultaneously feeling impressed that the video found an appreciative audience (of one), mixed with some cosmic mumbo-jumbo about feeling like I was clearly in the right place at the right time, mixed with some paranoia about targeted advertising (which, of course, this wasn't). That I was there to see the Stephen Hawking biography, The Theory of Everything, also felt relevant to this whole experience somehow.

All of this to say, Local Local's short video on Green Girl Press is lovely and worth a watch.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7112819853489631254.post-80808407660926820052014-02-18T22:11:00.000-08:002014-02-18T22:11:44.630-08:00You're a GemIt's been a long time since I've posted here, but I loved happening upon this design from Cartolina Cards:
I spent the morning in bed, drinking coffee and reading Paul Yoon's gorgeous new novel, Snow Hunters.

I also came across this fun post by Brain Pickings, showcasing a series of posters by Maurice Sendak promoting reading to children. These are my two favorites:
Somehow, we're a third into August. That means I should be thinking about a Christmas card, as far as the letterpress is concerned. My goal was to open an Etsy shop in 2013 with at least a small inventory, so I have only a few months left to do so.

Speaking of a love rush, my time home with Isobel has been amazing and though it seems like I should have a lot of printing time, my days are mostly filled with play and meals, and my free time on freelance writing work, not to mention keeping track of the plethora of photos we've amassed in the past year. So, the printing days are out there, and I'll get to them, eventually.
Since I'm a fan of local ephemera, I thought I'd repost it here.

This might resonate a little extra for me because I used to live a stone's throw from Ocean Beach and the Cliff House, and also because my grandpa grew up in the Sunset and he or other relatives sometimes talked about the Playland at the Beach. I feel grateful to have experienced a little bit of history crossing generations, as when I lived in the Outer Richmond, the Musee Mechanique was still housed below the Cliff House. I often took long walks along the Great Highway that ended at the arcade, where I'd spend my spare change on Laughing Sal and the nickel and dime machines.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7112819853489631254.post-16145378479974667532013-04-20T19:31:00.002-07:002013-04-20T19:40:03.234-07:00Thank You Ladies of Letterpress! As mentioned in my last post, I recently attended a workshop at the San Francisco Center for the Book. The workshop was focused on tabletop platen press maintenance - which, for me, as a newbie, is really important. It's sort of akin to playing a song on a badly tuned instrument. Even if you've learned the song, it won't sound good unless the instrument has been properly cared for. I am very grateful to the Ladies of Letterpress for allowing me to attend this workshop as a recipient of their 2013 scholarship!

The workshop was held in SFCB's new location on Rhode Island St., and what a beautiful space. I loved the way their old space was ink-splattered and lived-in and smelled vaguely of chemicals, but their new building has a sort of calm, cool, spacious vibe which allows them, importantly, to house more presses. There is room to print, offices, classrooms, a gallery, and a very long worktable - and all impeccably organized.

As luck would have it, the workshop was actually cancelled at the very last minute - so last minute that I was already onsite. But since my husband was at home with our baby, I had the freedom and time to enjoy the exhibition I last posted about.

The reschedule was the following week, and though the class size had grown in the meantime, another strange turn of events made it so the other four students couldn't attend. This time, however, both the instructor, Alan Hillesheim, and I were there, and so I had a private lesson. It was fantastic.

The center has 2 platen presses that are similar to mine, which we were able to use as references. The workshop covered how to level the platen on its four axis points, as well as how to advance the entire platen toward the press itself, the importance of taping the rails and when to do so, oiling the press, and general tips about packing and inking. As I was the only student, I was also able to ask specific questions about my press and other printing-related matters. Needless to say, in three hours we covered a lot of ground.

In light of the tragic bombings in Boston this week, I thought I'd share an exhibition I saw last week when I attended a workshop at the San Francisco Center for the Book. Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here is a collection of 55 artist's books that were created in response to the March 5, 2007 bombing of Baghdad's "Street of Booksellers." Each artist created three copies of their book, one copy of which will be donated to the Iraq National Library.

Needless to say, each resulting book was as unique as its creator. The photo quality is sorely lacking, but here are a few quick pictures I snapped:

Some books that were open to artwork included text excerpts on separate pieces of paper, so that you could sample the poetry or writing within, such as this:

It's Spring

by Loretta Cappanera

Italy, 2012

It was a clear morning, the first day of Spring. In the little flower pot on the bedside table was a bunch of violets, the white sheets, the hands placed one next to the other, tied to a blue thread. Those hands had accompanied mine when sketching my first designs and tenderly followed my first readings. There always was a book in his hands, even after a tiresome day. I wished to bind those hands to mine.

The day before, there had been a big demonstration in Rome against the war in Iraq. The thousands of people present had tightly held another's hands around an extremely long flag, bearing the colors of the rainbow and the writing, "It's Springtime."

The exhibition is open to the public. Just walk into the SFCB at 375 Rhode Island St., between 16th and 17th. Viewing hours are Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm and Saturdays from 10am - 4pm.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7112819853489631254.post-17002049640599928092013-03-31T09:37:00.003-07:002013-03-31T22:19:48.929-07:00Happy Easter

These maps really underscore how many ways there are to view the world. They also remind me of Rebecca Solnit's Infinite City, in which she explores my hometown of San Francisco in 22 unexpected maps and 19 really wonderful essays.
The latter is where I first spotted Anne Lee's Floral Alphabet. At first I thought it was a font, but no - even better - it's the real deal. Images by Anne Lee Designs.
I didn't intend to wait until the last moment to design and print our cards this year, but due to some circumstances beyond our control, we spent much of the Christmas prep time away from home - and away from the letterpress.

I wanted to create a letterpress photo card (much like what Apple offers here), as it was Izzy's first Christmas, but I wasn't sure where I could order only the photo print, on nice card stock.

So we went for an A6 flat card on Paper Source's lovely new Savoy Cotton paper and sent a separate photo of our daughter. We were trying to keep it simple, and were hoping for a sort of modern vintage feel. I'm not super thrilled with how the cards came out, but they made it into the mail before Christmas!
We spent a lovely morning breakfasting, learning new techniques, and practice-shooting in Kate's beautiful home.

The workshop was the perfect opportunity for me to finally spend some time with my Nikon D90, which I didn't have too long before my daughter was born. I spent the time playing with the aperture and manual focus settings so that I can finally start achieving the kind of images I've been after: more light-filled and with blurred backgrounds, hopefully to the benefit of my daughter, and also my letterpress work (which I've been quite busy with as of late!).

Here's a few of my practice shots:
Conveniently, I went from the workshop to lunch with my family and got a little more practice with my main subject these days:

In November of 2010, Kyle launched a Kickstarter campaign to outfit a Chevy step van with two letterpresses: an 1873 Golding Official No. 3 tabletop platen, and mid-twentieth century Showcard sign press (which was really cool).

Kyle spent a year traveling across North America in her mobile print shop before returning home to Oregon. Luckily for me, she recently took the van out for another spin and I was able to visit her shop and make a print. Given my love for books, our library-themed print will definitely be finding a home on our wall.
Even more rad, the company will donate an actual book to a community in need with each eJacket purchase. Available from Out of Print.
The designer and his girlfriend had a small table set up on Grant St., not far up from the opera singers (who were out singing, full force, on Maiden Lane), selling greeting cards - a welcome respite from all the jewelry, leather cuffs and knitted baby hats. I love that several of the cards feature local spots.
Perhaps even more interesting than Giant Gnome's street presence is their Card Gnome venture, set up like a stationary store with shelves to browse through. Though the experience is virtual - you pick a card and write a personal message - they will prep and physically send the card in the mail to your recipient, postage included.
I picked up this pulp magazine for five bucks at The Emporium in Jamestown.

Evidence of inflation: the magazine was originally sold for ten cents, back in July of 1946. My grandparents would have been entering their twenties at the time, perhaps at university, acclimating to life after war. As far as I know, this magazine was published monthly from at least 1941 to 1950 and possibly beyond. I don't know about my grandparents, but there's no question that I would have been down to read 10 love stories per month.

This issue is full of scandalous lines and terrific pulp art. To be sure, the stories are not for the modern feminist, but any good love story is bound to leave at least one person unhappy.
